Tunes

Many of the tunes we play are available on the net in abc format.  For information about abc, including software to process it (to print off sheet music, or play the tune on your computer), see the abc home page.  For a list of River Walk Music Session tunes in abc format, download our Tunebook.  If you want to see new tunes as we add them, join the Tune of the Month mailing list.

A truly great resource for finding tunes is John Chambers' TuneFinder, which allows you to look up tunes by entering any part of the title and returns gif, abc, postscript, and midi files for each tune it finds.

Following is a list of the current River Walk Music Session tunes.  Those that are links are in the Tunebook, and the link points to a GIF file containing an image of the standard music notation generated from the abc representation using BarFly, a popular abc tool for the Macintosh. Those that are not links are waiting to be added to the Tunebook.

The following tables attempt to organize these tunes by mode. The common modes are the Major modes Ionian (Dmaj and Gmaj) and Mixolydian (flatted 7th) (Dmix and Amix), and the Minor modes Dorian (Edor and Ador) and Aoelian (Eaoe and Baeo). A given tune may have different parts in different modes. In particular, it is common for a tune to switch between Dorian to Aoelian (by adding an accidental on the 6th) or between Ionian and Mixolydian (by adding an accidental on the 7th). The I, IV, and V chords for each mode are given (but remember to swap VImin for Imaj as appropriate).
